Due to COVID-19, most of today’s generation is experiencing a situation that they have encountered for the first time. Last such situation was faced in the year 1918 because of the Spanish Flu. The continuous need of wearing masks, thinking a million times before stepping outdoors, sanitizing everything including yourself before even entering your own house is leaving its marks on everyone’s psyche. We are working from homes, surrounded by the same comfortable environment that we grew-up in and still we are tired more than ever. Living in our safe and happy places, we neither feel safe nor happy anymore. Why do you think that is? 

Initial signs of Stress and Depression

Some of us are working from home hence our days are just as busy as they used to be. If at all, they are actually somewhat relaxed but what about those who cannot work from home or for how long can one watch stressful news without getting scared to death for what is going to happen next? For how long can one watch different online series or read books? Not very long. Another major reason for this anxiety is the downfall of the economy.

According to the World Bank, by the time we come out of this pandemic, more than 49 million more people will be below the poverty line. This uncertainty of the future and stress of the present has resulted in a constant worry in our conscious as well as subconscious mind. It is human nature that whenever we are faced with a problem, our first instinct is to escape but given the current circumstances, even that is not possible. We can’t go out, meet our friends or even go to the office just to distract ourselves; hence we have to suppress all these emotions and fears.

As a result, we feel trapped and suffocated, like we are in a dark, small room with only one window for us to feel the caresses of wind and taste the slivers of the sun. All this only makes us crave for these things even more, when in reality we can’t have them. The result is constant irritation and repulsion in our behavior. This is when we know that we are proceeding towards depression.

How do we know when depression has started to settle-in?

Usually we are told that depression is something that can be noticed by others but at the same time, it can be invisible. It is hard to identify the symptoms in most cases. It is tough but not impossible. This repulsion causes us to step down from our daily chores, just because we are tired of the constant disappointment that we face. Hence, we push ourselves into a temporary comfort zone, coming out of which is just too much of hard work. That’s when we know that our depression has started to settle on us.

Now the most common and basic signs of depression are:

  • Increase in sleeping hours
  • Sudden gain or loss of weight
  • Decrease in physical movement
  • Lack of focus on work or studies
  • A need to be isolated
  • Constant tiredness
  • Sudden Outbursts
  • Decrease in your social circle

The list continues. These changes can be noticed only when we analyze ourselves. By marking out the differences of how we were three months before and how we are now, we simply have to determine whether we exhibit the symptoms of depression or not. Then arises the question we all seek an answer for, “How can we fight it?”

How to fight or deal with Depression?

Whenever we hear someone say depression, the first thought that comes to our mind is that of therapists and antidepressants which obviously is the best solution. Before you move in that direction, you need to take the first step forward; it’s that of acknowledging the issue at hand. Depression is a fight with our own selves, to pull ourselves out of darkness, to clear the mess of our labyrinths, and to find positivity and the strength to get up again within ourselves.

The first step towards overcoming depression is to take a deep breath and tell yourself everyday that you are a fighter. Then make a routine for yourself. Exercise, go for a walk even if it is just on your patio, learn an instrument or dance but most importantly, write a journal at the end of every day. You can write about bitter sweet experiences, the fight with depression in those 24 hours, thoughts that crossed your mind, etc. Then, scratch all the negative ones written in your diary. These simple practices might seem a bit tiring at first but let us assure you, there’s nothing that you can’t beat with positive resilience.

Work on self-leadership by choosing your habits and thoughts wisely, taking control of your mind. Give your life the direction of your choice. It is important to let your feelings out. Talk to your friends and family. Make a plan and live life to its fullest.
