How Do I Stop Obsessing Over The Future Or The Past And Live In The Present?

”Live in the present moment” or ”Live your life in the best possible way” are sentences that we have heard in movies, web series, in daily life, etc. but do we actually live our life to the fullest or are we living every moment of our lives in the best possible way? This remains a question for everyone. We all live in the twenty-first century where everything is practical and money-oriented. We live to become successful which is good if you are ambitious, and trying to achieve your dreams is actually a good decision. However, at times we forget the importance of life. The future is important but what about the present? Again, a question mark which everyone has in their lives. The past has taught us so many things but some of us are still more connected to it. In this merry-go-round of past and future, we completely forget our present. It is extraordinary that the present is here with us today but we never have time to appreciate it and live it. 

As author Myrko Thum says, the present moment is all there truly is: ”The present moment is the only thing where there is no time. It is the point between the past and the future. It is always there and it is the only point we can access time. Everything that happens, happens at the present moment. Everything that ever happened and will ever happen can only happen at the present moment. It is impossible for anything to exist outside of it.”

WHAT DOES IT FEEL LIKE TO BE IN THE PRESENT MOMENT?

When you are living in the present moment, you are free from any distractions that may have occurred or are about to happen in your life. Past experiences give you knowledge to fight a situation but they never define you. When you live in the present moment all your past experiences give you strength to fight and face the situations. Future plannings become more clear because you have control over your present thoughts. Living in the present helps you to focus on your goals and hence you are more productive.

IMPORTANCE OF THE PRESENT MOMENT

As we are talking about the present moment, let’s discuss the importance of living in the present. Living in the present moment makes you productive. You have control over your thoughts and emotions. You can perform every task without any distraction from the past or the future. This makes you happy and healthy. The stress and anxiety about the future sets you free if you allow your present to have a talk with you. Living in this moment creates a positive attitude and helps in overall development. ”The secret of health for both mind and body is not to mourn for the past, to worry about the future or to anticipate the troubles, but to live in the present moment wisely and earnestly”, said Buddha. 

HOW TO PLAN YOUR FUTURE?

The future is essential for all of us. We are working hard today to have a great life ahead but sometimes thinking about the future becomes more important than any other task. If you are planning about your future in the present for becoming strong, successful or more stable in your life, it requires a strong hold on the present moment. You have ‘now’ in your hands, you can do your degree, go for that holiday, buy that dress or eat that dish without thinking twice because in the end all that matters is your happiness. Planning your future can be elementary if you are doing your present task with full concentration and peace. If we are at peace with ourselves, we are more productive.

CONNECT WITH THE PRESENT

  1. Meditate – To connect with yourself at this moment start meditating. About 15-20 minutes of meditation daily is important.
  2. Think positive before starting your day –  Before you move out of your bed, think positively about your day for at least 5 minutes.
  3. Prepare a journal – Writing your thoughts on a piece of paper gives you more clarity about yourself. Writing a journal can help a lot and can give clarity on your thoughts.
  4. Take nature walk – Going for a walk and observing nature can give peace and pleasure. The green grass when touches your feet will surely make you forget all your problems.
  5. Cuddle your pet – Pets are a blessing and loving them and caring for them will surely give you peace and pleasure.
