What is Mental Health?
Waking up with a smile, going to school, laughing with friends and just simply being happy, this is what life is and as we grow up and attain the so called “maturity,” we leave the smiles behind for frowns and scowls. Tension lines become a sign of growing up and embracing the hardship that we call Life.
Do you ever stop and wonder what this stress and hustle bustle of daily life does to your mental health. Do you feel you are mentally healthy?
The World Health Organization (WHO) stresses that “mental health is not just the absence of mental disorder.” Mental health, instead, is all about the way we think, feel, react and behave.” It does not mean that mentally healthy people do not feel stress or do not deal with life problems rather it is about managing that stress, balancing work and personal matters and just being happy in life.
Signs that you are NOT emotionally/ mentally healthy
⦁ Comparing yourself with others and finding yourself lacking
⦁ Often feeling low at random moments
⦁ Repressing your emotions rather than embracing them
⦁ Having trouble sleeping
⦁ Feelings of not fitting in with friends or family
⦁ Loss of interest in hobbies
⦁ Having difficulties in emotionally connecting with people around you
Ask yourself if you’re feeling any or most of the above on a regular basis and if your answer is yes, you my dear, are struggling emotionally and have to work on improving your mental health.
But fret not, now that we have identified and accepted the problem we just have to work on replacing those scowls with smiles.
HOW TO ACHIEVE MENTAL WELL-BEING?
Follow these small steps and see how much it changes those negatives inside you to positive mental health.
⦁ ACCEPTING YOURSELF
The first and most important part of achieving mental well being is accepting yourself for who you are. Stop envying and comparing. Stop trying to be perfect or pretending to be someone you’re not. Remember, they are not you and you are not them. So stop trying to hide your flaws, they make you who you are. And these flaws make you beautiful. Don’t set unrealistic expectations for yourself or you will be setting yourself for a downfall.
⦁ HEALTH IS WEALTH
It has been scientifically proven that meditation calms your mind and energizes you from within. It increases concentration and manage insomnia. Meditation is medicine for one’s body as well as mind. Health is wealth so take care of your body. Physical health is just as important as mental health. Sleep well ,eat healthy foods, drink plenty of water and do not forget to excercise. Even early morning walks help in settling and refreshing the mind.
This cannot be stressed enough. Sharing your feelings is a very big part of emotional stability. Rather than shutting them out and pushing them to the back of the mind try to share them, if you do not trust your thoughts with your friends or family or if you feel that they will judge you for them, then write, a journal, poetry or paint, sing, do whatever it takes for you purge those feelings out.
⦁ DENIAL IS NOT THE ANSWER, ACCEPTANCE IS
Do you too live with your head in the clouds, lost in your own alternate reality, because it is just so much easier there, so much safer to let the real you come out? It is okay to have a fantasy world but when that fine line between reality and fantasy blurs, thats when you have to step back. Refusing to accept the truth doesn’t make it go away. Yes, it will be hard at first but if you keep putting it off it’s going to hurt a lot more when reality knocks down the door.
⦁ RELAX AND WHEN NEEDED, ASK FOR HELP
To take time out for yourself is not selfishness but necessity. This time is essential for self reflection, thinking and putting things in perspective. Visit your favourite places, eat the food you love and just relax.
And remember, do not ever hesitate to ask for help. We are just humans, we make mistakes, we are not perfect and sometimes support is needed. It’s ok to ask for help. The people who care about you will not judge you for it.
