Role of Exercising in Mental Health

You are one workout away from a good mood.

The role of exercise for a happy mood had been perfectly described by the above quote. Everyone is well aware of the benefits of exercise for developing a healthy and fit body but hardly half of us know that exercise plays an equally important role in developing a healthy mind. Physical and mental health are two equally important aspects of an individual’s well-being. We cannot have a healthy body sans a peaceful mind and vice-versa.

Everyone toils hard each day to make their ends meet, which leaves very little time to look after our health. In such a situation, a single task which can help one take care of the utmost desired aspects of an individual’s well-being, should not be ignored. Exercise is one such activity. While we are engrossed in working towards a better future, we cannot neglect the importance of staying happy, calm and healthy as only a better today can ensure a better tomorrow.

An exercise is an activity requiring physical effort, carried out to sustain or improve health and fitness. Exercise is necessary for people of all ages. Kids are involved in one or other kinds of exercises at school as well at home but as they grow up into a busier schedule the importance of physical games and exercises starts taking a backseat.

As elders, we should take it as a responsibility for ourselves and the younger generation to mandatorily indulge in exercise snd make it an indispensable part of our daily routine. It can be in the form of playing games like football, badminton, tennis, or even dancing, going to the gym, etc.

A sedentary lifestyle is a home to various health issues, such as obesity, heart diseases, diabetes, etc. Such a lifestyle poses a risk of developing serious mental and physical health issues. To prevent serious outcomes of such kind, we can start by doing a small exercise like using stairs instead of lifts. Little by little, one can increase the duration as per their schedule and interest.

  • Reduces risks of cardiovascular diseases.
  • Manages insulin levels.
  • Manages weight.
  • Lifts mood.
  • Helps in getting sound sleep.
  • Reduces risks of depression, anxiety, stress-related problems.
  • Balances energy levels

Along with its numerous benefits for our physical health, exercise has a lot to do for our mental health as well. Its mental and emotional benefits have a major role to play in positive and happy behavior. Several studies have proved that even the simplest of exercises such as a brisk walk can act as a great stress-buster and mood- lifter. People who exercise regularly are more positive, cheerful, and high on energy than those who don’t. There is a valid reason behind the same, which is that any sort of physical activity helps stimulates chemicals in the brain which are vital in relieving stress.

One such chemical is Endorphin. As a result of exercise, our brain produces Endorphins which minimizes the feeling of discomfort and makes a person a little euphoric. They are said to reduce pain and boost pleasure, thereby contributing to one’s mental wellbeing.

Another chemical produced during exercise is Oxytocin. Also known as the love hormone, it is said to produce pleasant feelings in a human by reducing antagonism and increasing positivity. It facilitates social interaction and emotional intelligence. Needless to say that a fulfilling life is not led without a certain amount of emotional and social understanding, thus making exercise an extremely necessary part of our routine.

Other very important happy hormones, known as dopamine and serotonin are also secreted while exercising. Dopamine, the feel-good hormone generates pleasurable-sensations and also aids in enhancing focus, planning, organizing, etc. The significance of dopamine can be understood from the fact that most of the mental health disorders are a result of abnormal secretion of dopamine.

So, by taking care of it we can avoid a good number of health issues. Serotonin, also known as the happy-chemical or natural mood stabilizer, is a major contributor to the wellbeing and happiness of an individual. It also manages sleep, digestion, appetite, memory and learning.

Thus, exercise turns out to be extremely necessary not only for our physical but also mental health. It is one of the most ‘easy-to-adapt’ determinants of well-being. By adopting exercise as a part of our routine we pave our way towards optimistic, healthy, and happy living. It is always easier to write than to do something practically, but once you decide to gift yourself the gift of inner and outer satisfaction, there’s no going back.
