How Can I Make My Surroundings Mental Health Friendly?

‘I can’t be in such a toxic environment’, one would have heard this line from either their friends or their family.

But what is this ‘Toxic Environment’ that they are talking about ?

  • A toxic environment can be anything from an unhealthy relationship or a negative work environment to self esteem issues or lack of self-care.
  •  Being happy can be extremely challenging in a toxic environment which is why creating a mentally healthy environment becomes even more important.

SENSITISATION to Mental Health Issues-

In times of great insensitivity towards others it becomes very important to create awareness regarding mental health issues. Society is rigid towards acceptance of mental ailment and shoos away even the fact that people do suffer from some or the other mental issue.

What needs to be done is first the society needs to recognise the changes in people and then accept them without disregarding the person at the receiving end.

STOP LABELLING

‘He is an introvert’ or ‘she is always depressed’ or ‘she is anxious all the time’ or ‘he is in a mood.’

  • One needs to stop using labels like these for others because little do we know, it does affect a lot of people in your surrounding and the person you may be referring to might over think about your claims which makes it worse.
  • Using terms like depression, anxiety, mood, introvert-extrovert or hyper casually can be damaging for others, so one needs to start thinking about the kind of terms they are using and be a little sensitive with your sentences. It’s high time , one needs to know the repercussions of casual tones.
  • Figuring out when someone is going through much more than being in a mood is what’s required in the times when people around you are dealing with a mental health issue.

PUBLIC TREATMENT

  • Research suggests people with smaller social networks with fewer intimate relationships find it even more difficult to manage social settings, and now imagine a person who is mentally unhealthy on top of all this, It will be even worse for such people if people around them are of no help.
  • One has to develop normalcy in their attitude while dealing with people with mental health issues. Just a simple smile works☺
  • Secondly, don’t make them feel isolated just because they are dealing with something does not mean that they are not one amongst you, they are very much a part of your circle and must be treated equally.
  • Thirdly, don’t constantly remind them about what they are going through because in situations like that, anything can be a trigger.
  • Lastly, don’t make them feel marked or treated unusually.

Mental health friendly surrounding

If you have friends or family members suffering from any mental health issue then the least at the same time the most you can do is ‘accept them’, be a good listener whenever they want to speak their heart out and do not give them advice without thinking twice since your unheeded statement can have an impact on them. Creating a safe and nonjudgmental environment for whenever they are with you should be your precedence. You need to realize that at the time of vulnerability they will turn up to you to seek guidance and support at that point of time one needs to make them feel at ease to vent it out.

What can you do to help?

  • Be a good listener.
  • Encourage them to go on a nature walk.
  • Accept their issues without judging them.
  • Don’t ignore their issue.
  • Observe their behaviour closely and do not make them feel strange about it.
  • Keep your thoughts positive.
  • Encourage them to take time out for themselves.
  • Give them space.
  • Don’t force your opinion on them.
  • Talk to them wisely.
  • Create positive energy around them.
  • Keep them away from toxic people.
  • Empathize with them.
  • Do not make them feel isolated.
  • Be present for them.
  • Keep their triggers in mind.

Michelle Obama once said, ‘At the root of this dilemma is the way we view mental health. Whether an illness affects your heart, your leg or your brain, it’s still an illness, and there should be no distinction.’ Our society at large has a habit of sliding issues under the carpet and rubbishing issues that they think are not primary, but the only way we can come out of it is when we acknowledge changes in their surroundings and be helpful towards others. One can individually try and build up a more healthy and positive environment because every individual contributes to the lives of their mates. Contributing towards their growth for it will only make the world a better place to live.
